Yahoo Gobbles Up Something del.icio.us

Posted by Eric Stewart Fri, 09 Dec 2005 20:57:00 GMT

Now it has happened. Yahoo has purchased del.icio.us! This is on the heels of Yahoo purchasing Flickr earlier this year.

I can’t put a finger on why I’m slightly dissapointed. I’m pretty sure it is because:
  • I am afraid of what a large purchaser will do to a service I (and apparently so many other people) love to use, and love for it’s simplicity.
  • I worry about the inevitable tie-ins to their other services (Although this can certainly have some benefits as well)
  • For some reason, I was rooting for Google. I just like their simpilicity, though they break that on some of their beta products.
  • Yahoo, while initially interesting, has been the poster child for mediocrity for quite a while now. It hasn’t locked in my mind that they are competing and innovating again.

In the end, does it matter? Google and Yahoo competing might be good for us all in the long run. But in the short term I don’t want sites and services I love to get caught in the tug of war and ruin my online experience.

ADC Phone Call

Posted by Eric Stewart Tue, 15 Nov 2005 18:56:00 GMT

Being a software developer and a Mac user means there is a pretty good chance you have registered for at least the free membership to the Apple Developer Connection. It seems to be a nice program, though I haven’t had the opportunity to heavily utilize it yet.

I was also a subscriber to MSDN (the Microsoft Developer Network) years back. These are great resources for developers.

I was quite pleasantly surprised earlier today when I discovered a phone message apparently from Apple regarding some developer related goings on. Neither the ADC or MSDN had bothered calling me about anything before.

The problem is I really don’t know what they were trying to point out. While the woman on the phone seemed to have a delightful British accent, her rapid firing of words and lack of enunciation left me puzzled. In the middle of it all I thought I made out universal binary and transition kit which is the only way know who the call was from or why.

I couldn’t even decypher the web address she pointed out. Hopefully there will be a handy email explaining it all soon. ;)

Google Analytics could be interesting

Posted by Eric Stewart Tue, 15 Nov 2005 18:19:00 GMT

I am definitely interested to see what comes out of Google Analytics. I have heard good things about Urchin, the product that Google bought and is now rebranding as Analytics. There’s some interesting in a powerful analysis tool that offers special analysis for things like AdWords.

I’ve heard great buzz about new tools like MeasureMap that supposedly are addressing just that, but I’ve been waiting for my beta invite and still haven’t seen it yet.

AWStats has been a faithful tool to me so far, but I’m feeling the needs for something new that can tell me a bit more about my site traffic.

Unfortunately I’m going to have to wait a little while for Analytics to collect some data and kick in. I’m hearing that there may be some problems related to existing Urchin customers.

Ethan Stock is one of those existing Urchin customers that is being effected by this. I’m not sure how much to make out of the problems yet, but I did like this quote from his post on the subject:

Google isn’t acting like a real business, they are acting like an over-enthusiastic Golden Retriever puppy. Oh, they just knocked the vase off the table with their tail, but aren’t they cute? Um, no. Google, grow up.

I’m not trying to point out anything in particular here. I just really liked his analogy. Hopefully they’ll get this situation worked out soon.
