Thanks for the Typo Theme Contest

Posted by Eric Stewart Sat, 10 Dec 2005 19:08:00 GMT

As a Typo user and someone who is asthetically impaired I just want to say thank you for everyone who particpated in the Typo Theme Contest.

The winners have been announced and they deserve all the great prizes that are being handed out.

A few weeks back, before the end of the contest, I chose one of the submissions for my latest theme. I really liked the Lush theme. Marco van Hylckama Vlieg did an incredible job and deserved better than 8th place. I don’t really understand some of the higher place winners, but I’m glad not everyone shares my tastes either.

This is good for everyone! Now, if only these themes had all been made accessible as well! That’s the main change I have planned for Lush on this site. <!- technorati tags start ->

Google Analytics could be interesting

Posted by Eric Stewart Tue, 15 Nov 2005 18:19:00 GMT

I am definitely interested to see what comes out of Google Analytics. I have heard good things about Urchin, the product that Google bought and is now rebranding as Analytics. There’s some interesting in a powerful analysis tool that offers special analysis for things like AdWords.

I’ve heard great buzz about new tools like MeasureMap that supposedly are addressing just that, but I’ve been waiting for my beta invite and still haven’t seen it yet.

AWStats has been a faithful tool to me so far, but I’m feeling the needs for something new that can tell me a bit more about my site traffic.

Unfortunately I’m going to have to wait a little while for Analytics to collect some data and kick in. I’m hearing that there may be some problems related to existing Urchin customers.

Ethan Stock is one of those existing Urchin customers that is being effected by this. I’m not sure how much to make out of the problems yet, but I did like this quote from his post on the subject:

Google isn’t acting like a real business, they are acting like an over-enthusiastic Golden Retriever puppy. Oh, they just knocked the vase off the table with their tail, but aren’t they cute? Um, no. Google, grow up.

I’m not trying to point out anything in particular here. I just really liked his analogy. Hopefully they’ll get this situation worked out soon.

Typo category feeds continued

Posted by Eric Stewart Sat, 11 Jun 2005 21:57:00 GMT

I just updated my recent post on adding feeds per category in Typo. If you had trouble getting my modified files, take a look again. I'll be submitting them as patches soon, but need to look at the main categories template a little more considering the new default css in the Typo trunk.

Tweakin' Typo

Posted by Eric Stewart Fri, 03 Jun 2005 08:06:00 GMT

I've been playing with even more and I'm loving it. Just look how good the new logo looks! That's the most important thing!

Typo Logo

I thought I was going to have to start from scratch adding per-category syndicated feeds, but luckily someone had already submitted a patch. Unfortunately, the patch only set up the xml_controller routing (the meat of the feature). So, I modified the categories list to provide syndication links for each category. Then I edited the syndication view code itself to include the category in the link, title, and descriptions so all the feeds for a blog don't have the same info/link.

I'm going to clean it all up a little more and submit as a patch, but will provide those files here if anyone is interested:

Make sure an apply the patch above for this to work

Update: I fixed one of the links here and added some clarifying information for anyone who had trouble getting these files. Also, the _categores.rhtml template looks especially hokey in the new default css in the typo trunk, so it definitely has to change now.
